In the final weeks of 2017, the Vatican announced the first-round winners of its climate change Start-ups challenge. Out of the 300 entrants, the 9 successful applicants achieved funding of $100,000, each. This money will go towards the development of innovative technologies. Cardinal Turkson was quoted as saying “Hi-tech, artificial intelligence and all those elements can contribute to the well-being of the Earth”. This recognition of the simultaneous increase in technological capability, and contemporary Sustainability issues is an indication of two of the most crucial factors of human longevity in the early 21st century.
