Less than a year ago, in April 2017, Carillion was awarded the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development. The award recognises outstanding achievement by U.K businesses. However, today, Carillion has gone into liquidation. Having won an award for sustainable business practices, when the business strategy has clearly been unsustainable, raises important questions into the criteria of what constitutes “Sustainability”, and the reliability of this Awards Body as a measure of it.
